Goobe's Book Republic Flyer

Goobe’s book republic sounds funny if kannadigas read it. For non Kannadigas, it means owl its right there very obvious in the logo. But i really like the name and the style of it. This is a small library with vast collection of books on Churchstreet, MG Road, Bangalore. The strategy may be right here. Funny name, easy recall and I like the logo too, done by Abhijith my colleague. Wats my role here? I happened to do the flyer for them I had liked a japanese illustration long back with a mix of dull and contrasting colours like this in a work, Im sorry I dnt have the link. When this work came up i couldnit think of anything else when i saw the colour of the logo and that green in the owls eye. Well thats it i made an illustration and used it as a splash. The illustration is also inspired by one of the animation video i saw on youtube titled “The Owl”. Keep looking for more print related work, I have plenty to post actually.

I always used to try my hands on tablet, but never got a good hold of it. I always watched abhilash moving his hands smoothly on tablet a small 6 inch one. Infact I rarely see him using mouse. I got better with it with this particular illustration.  I initially did a similar concept  and my CD said, just remove those eyes and nose from those teapot and cups and see what happens.

Do you see what I’m Saying? There’s no life in it, its just like another set of objects just drawn and painted. Try drawing these objects without any eyes or mouth. Add it only to enhance the expression and this is what i came with. This was my 1st complete tablet work. It’s really fun working on a tablet just because the paint flows on the pressure you apply on the pen. Cool isn’t it? As this I’m getting used to illustrations I feel i”m getting better as well. Lets See.

Differentiate…Illustrate

Another poster of my favourite ever poster and art nouveau designer, Alphonse Mucha. This is a poster done to put across a message saying differentiate your work by illustrating it and not by going with photography. It is true that photography has thrown out lot of illustrators if you look back into the past. I have imagined how it would have been for illustrators when photography was not such a big thing. When i used to walk on the streets i used to enjoy watching the flouroscent coloured movie posters which are now hardly seen.

Anyways, Kablam is here to make a difference. reminding every1 again that a lot can be done with illustrations. Vimal started working on the reproduction of one of his favourite Alphonse Mucha’s print. I took it up as post production and re compositing job and making the entire illustration look like an old faded out poster and giving it a contemporary element. if you have a closer look the pretty lady is listening to ipod.

I’m posting the before – what my super duper illustrator Vimal gave me and After – what i made it look like in the end. have a look at it and enjoy.

Aha! Finally something i always wanted to do. We had been sending all our artworks in a normal CD cover purchased from stationery store. Each CD cover costing us 2 RS each. Finally i decided let’s make a CD Cover that help us market ourselves and also make sure that when our clients get this CD Cover they don’t throw it away.

Now another problem was money. It would have costed us 8 Rs each CD cover, if digitally printed. Mmmmmm I had to do something. Brown Covers was the 1st idea that came to my mind. But Now what will be the illustration on it was my second problem. How to print it 3rd problem.

I decided to work backwards.

3rd problem how to print – I realised we had an inkjet printer in office. Colour printouts never usually come out well, It’s ok keep it single colour.

2nd problem – what illustration to go on the Cover? I told my fellows, do anything you like, any style as long as it is single colour i.e. black. Abhilash and Dhvani got on to the job. Both of them did what they like and gave it to me. Now it was my Job to make sure it goes well.

1st problem – What material? I decided to work on brown paper. 1 brown paper demmi size costed me 8bucks, but i could print 16 CD covers.

I quickly made a template and pasted these illustrations on it and printed.

And my privilege, the 1st CD Cover went to JWT. And apparently they just loved the CD Cover and the way we printed it as well, Cheap and Effective. Have a look at it, I really enjoyed working on this stuff. Thanks to my fellows Abhilash and Dhvani.
